Well once I began attempting to find a repair for my Xbox 360 RROD, I became confused by all of the information in existence. You can find a million sites, each selling their instruction manuals (normally $24.95. You can get some for free) and there are the multitudes of YouTube videos claiming to have found the magic remedy. The 3 that I am about to review are what seem like the most famous (and many times most ludicrous).
Number #1 - The Towel Trick - It goes something like this: You take the hard drive off, cover the entire device in a towel to stop the surplus heat from escaping, turn the console on approximately 15 minutes to cook (some instructions advise 60 minutes), shut it down, unplug it for an hour, plug it back in and like magic it functions. But why? I haven't heard a good explanation yet. Here is one of the answers..."the machine gets so sizzling hot that it melts the solder that was cracking to the induce the red lights to start with"..... Listed here are a handful of potential dangers as brought up in the same information "could perhaps damage other parts of the Xbox".... "The device could catch on fire it gets so hot". I've got to say I will rate this as the 2nd most absurd Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death repair of the three in consideration. Suggestion: Do not use this repair.
Number #2 - The Ice Bath - I wouldn't even desire to explain how to do this. Simply, a rubbermaid tub is full of ice water, some vinegar is added, the Xbox 360 is unplugged and immersed in the water/vinegar combination. After so many minutes the console is removed, drained of water and immediately plugged back in. Need I say more. I actually got word of a kid who attempted this and was severely shocked. This as lots of other fixes was presented as a youtube video. Really it is quite reckless and should really be removed. This repair is the most preposterous fix of the three in consideration. Advice: Never even give thought to employing this repair should you value your wellbeing.
Number #3 - X-Clamp Fix - Here is the only genuine repair I have discovered thus far. It will be as fixed as it gets. Don't use it however if your Xbox 360 is still under warranty. Send the console to Microsoft and let them honor the warranty. However, if your seal is broken and/or it's not under warranty this repair is the best option. This is actually the repair in summary; you open up the console, take away the x-clamps, clean up the old thermal paste, put fresh thermal paste on, swap the x-clamps by using screws and washers, reassemble the machine, overheat, allow it cool down and it works on in the region of 90% of the units. Recommendation: Utilize this Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error fix.
